Level of Chaos: Not listening to Monorail announcements
The day had finally come as it was the last day in Japan and I was going to head to the airport after doing something I had not really planned, but was going to visit anyway. I had packed the night before so was ready for the journey ahead. My bag was around 16 kilos when I took it down stairs last night, although I did get a strange look from reception, at least they had scales. I tried to sleep in, but that didn’t seem to work that well, but at least I got to rest for a little bit longer. Once I was ready to checkout I took my bags and got the hotel to look after them until I returned. The poor lady who is a trainee trying to lift my bag.
The plan I had was to actually visit a museum since I was in the area and I didn’t fill that plan when I first arrived in the city. In Ueno since I was a short walk away as I am staying at the next station. I found there was a grave site for some warriors loyal to the Tokugawa and were defeated in the battle of Ueno hill. So many things in the area I just happen to find. Something I was searching for before going to the museum, was some more manhole covers, which I found and there was an extra one outside the Natural history museum. I ended up wandering that museum for several hours. They had a little about Japanese history after they learnt about the Western stuff like trains and manufacturing. I found one part interesting about their deep sea divers and the research they had done especially on the trench where the 2011 quake occurred. A lot of the info was in Japanese but the interactive displays did have English so you could get away with some of it. What I could read was interesting especially when they had about the Trex crouching down to ambush prey. Apparently that was some new research. There was more to the museum than I expected even though most I didn’t know and I was able to use the interactive computers to help, but there was also an app of sorts that took you around.
By the time I left and picked up my bags it was getting closer to being able to checkin. I had rearranged my bags at the hotel and then moved on. I knew which train to catch and then get a transfer to the monorail. That part was easy, until I decided for some reason on hearing the number 3 was to get off the train. Turns out this wasn’t my stop and I had to wait for the next monorail to turn up. Then I got to terminal 3, not station number 3. Once at the station, I couldn’t get the correct escalator as I was supposed to be on one floor, but I went up and then went one floor too far. There was a whole shopping area I could walk through to get to the hotel. I had to wait until 3pm to check in and I wandered off with bags. When I returned I could sort out the check in a couple of mins early. Turns out it was a hike to my room and luckily I had a luggage trolley as that helped.
Once I got settled in my room, I went for a wander to the airport for a look around. I ended up having a hamburger the Japanese style, and it was filling even if it wasn’t big. I looked around the shops and ended up watching the planes from the viewing platform outside. I could see the haze from the city in the distance and that could be a big part of the heat as well. I ended up back in my room and rearranging my bags for the trip the next day as I leave early in the morning. Wanting to leave a little bit earlier after a drink as it seems to take a bit to get away.
